Conservation and Local Development: An Attainable Balance

We’re working to implement a model that protects Puchegüín’s nature while honoring the local community’s historical ties to this region. Of Puchegüín’s 133,000 hectares, about 20,000 will be set aside as a multi-use conservation area for activities such as small-scale livestock ranching and nature tourism, and more than 110,000 will be strictly protected to safeguard critical ecosystems like alerce forests and endangered species habitat.

How will we protect Puchegüín?

An initiative grounded in scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and continuous community engagement

Our process

Our progress

We signed a purchase agreement with the Puchegüín property owners, helping us prevent threats to the area while we raise the necessary funds to buy the land and implement a conservation plan

In August 2025, we established a Chilean nonprofit foundation that will be the legal owner of the land. Its bylaws ensure conservation, sustainable use, and local participation are safeguarded in the long term.

We conducted wildlife monitoring using camera traps and other techniques – generating key information for the region’s long-term conservation planning.

We advanced local community participation through workshops, interviews, and field meetings to integrate local knowledge and perspectives into the design of the conservation plan.

We’re raising funds in Chile and across the world, with contributions coming from individuals, companies, and foundations.

What will we do after purchasing Puchegüín?

Initial purchase and protection

Apply a Derecho Real de Conservación (a Chilean legal tool to support conservation) to the land

Zoning and participatory planning

In collaboration with local communities and technical teams, designate areas for strict conservation and sustainable use

Infrastructure implementation

Improve historic trail and install signage for regulated, low-impact tourism

Strengthening local capacities

Lead trainings and continue building partnerships with local organizations

Integration into the National System of Protected Areas

Work with SBAP and the Ministry of the Environment to secure public and permanent protection of the area

The opportunity to protect Cochamó is now.
